My current practice involves exploring the self. I am interested in the concept of identity as a construct and how society’s influence unconsciously changes our behavior over time. I communicate this by painting self-portraits and working with a personal narrative. The portraits I paint appear uncertain, verging on the unrecognisable, but they each represent me and the confusion that comes with being between two identities. I can, therefore, place myself in familiar yet unknown environments. My work conceptualises this by withdrawing from society and I place the individual in a new constructed environment. I respond to the frustration and alienation felt that being present in society can cause. My ideas engage with issues of the everyday, for example, the negative effects of social media and as well as issues around boundaries and consent.

My interests lie in the manipulation of paint: its application and the handling of the brush. I am interested in challenging the conventional ways of painting. My paintings are characterised by visible brushstrokes, which creates depth through layering a series of disorderly marks to create a form. I use this to make a connection with themes of uncertainty in my work. I am always pushing to develop my painting style and strengthening my technique. The framework of my paintings are devised from a traditional figurative structure, but instinctively, the work becomes more abstract and gestural when the painting process begins.
